Zacarias, a 17-year-old Portuguese man, dreams of having great adventures. He signs up for the army during World War I. He is sent to Mozambique, Africa, to defend the Portuguese colony from German invasion. Zacarias, however, contracts malaria and is left behind when the army marches to battle. Determined to have his adventure, Zacarias leaves, alone, to catch up with the other soldiers. Still suffering from malaria, he cannot distinguish reality and hallucinations. In his journey, he encounters (or, at least, believes he encounters) wild animals, German deserters and lost colonists. Mosquito is based on the true story of the director’s grandfather, a soldier sent to Mozambique in the war.
