Off the Beaten Track (2025)

Sobre o filme

Tahiti, 1903. Physician and writer Victor Segalen, arriving from France after a long journey, sets off for Hiva’Oa to meet Paul Gauguin in person. Upon arriving on the island, he is informed that the painter had recently passed away. Following in his footsteps, Segalen visits his studio, collects his paintings and personal objects, discovers the diary “Noa Noa,” and meets those who spent time with the painter. Through the voices of the island’s inhabitants, Segalen gets to know Gauguin. In addition to the famous “Hommage à Gauguin” and “Gauguin dans son dernier décor,” Segalen then begins writing his famous and forever incomplete “Essai sur L’exotisme,” a timeless reflection on interculturality. Taking its title from the graphic novel “Gaughin: Off the Beaten Track” by Christophe Gaultier and Maximilien Le Roy, which inspired it, the film adapts the writings of Victor Segalen and constructs a magnificent vision of the work, life, excesses, anxieties, ambiguities and contradictions of the great artist.
