In 1917, Lionel — a talented young music student — met David at the Boston Conservatory, where they bonded over their shared deep love of folk music. Years later, Lionel received a letter from David, which led them on an impromptu trip through the Maine backwoods to collect traditional folk songs. This unexpected encounter, the love affair it sparked, and the music they collected and preserved would influence the course of Lionel’s life far beyond his own consciousness.
