A family is gathered for lunch on a sleepy summer’ afternoon in the country. The meal is over, and they decide to while away the time each their own way. Antonio, in the yard, looks on with interest at an ethnological group of part-time harvesters reaping the wheat. Later, in his library, he amuses himself with the different aspects of biological evolution. His wife has nothing to do and tries to entertain herself with pastimes that are not altogether appealing. The older daughter plays the piano, and the youngest ventures into the woods. The grandmother goes off to look for someone who will not return again, and the grandfather is there lying on the bed mulling over his lost youth.
