Oil Children (2001)

In a city in the south of Iran, in Masjed Soleyman, where the first oil well in the Middle East was drilled and that is today, one of the main oil producing centers in the country, a family endeavors to make a living in the absence of the father who has gone to Kuwait as a hired hand. The little boy of 11 must struggle against the cruelty with which his mother and sister are treated. Eight months after the father leaves, they still have to borrow money from a man who, not only takes their mule as a guarantee of payment, but covets the younger daughter age 12. He wants to marry her in exchange for the debt. The boy tries various ways of obtaining money to save his sister. He steals flowers at night to sell them in the daytime and works in the local oil market. In desperation, he bets with the other children that he can walk a pipe over a ravine without falling off.
