Edmond (2005)

Sobre o filme

Foreknowledge of the future as told to him by a fortune-teller, has made an impact on executive Edmond Bruke and causes him to confront the emptiness of his life and of his marriage. He decides to throw everything up, his family and the security of his comfortable house in the suburbs, to live in the underworld of New York in search of redemption. To his surprise, prostitutes are expensive, and informers are prone to violence. Even so, Edmond marvels at the streets and all the characters therein, dragging through the night. On one occasion, he is robbed, beaten up and humiliated. He discovers liberation when he kills the black man that attacked him. Edmond then goes back home with Gleena, but noisy sex ends in a long, serious talk. She is frustrated: he refuses to accept her disillusionment and knifes her so she will bleed to death. He blames her for the crime. Edmond then begins a process of personal degradation and gives vent to his racism and homophobia. In prison, held for murder, he is raped by his cell mate, but eventually finds comfort in his company. An adaptation of the play by the same name by playwright and filmmaker David Marnet. The film shows a radical change in the path taken by director Stuart Gordon in his career as a specialist in horror films and science fiction; nevertheless, Jeffrey Combs, his fetiche-actor, is present in a supporting role.
