2000 Nordestes (2000)

Sobre o filme

A documentary on Northeasterners, at the crossover into the Year 2000. A "nordestino" in Brazil is not only a classification by geographical origin, but mainly a name that goes back to a mix of ancient tradition and a very specific socio-cultural situation in the region. It is precisely this peculiarity that is shown here in face of contemporary culture and globalization. The film includes all of the Northeast: Ceará, Bahia, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Norte, and much else. Even down to São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, with the "nordestino" diaspora. The film, therefore, provides a broad portrait of the cultural reality of these people with examples ranging from the traditional maracatú to the modern manguebit. This is a road movie in search of the roots of the people from the northeast, and enriched with scenes from classical films on the Northeast, such as Vidas Secas, by Nelson Pereira dos Santos and Deus e o Diabo na Terra do Sol, by Glauber Rocha.
