A political parable on the life of Don Calixto, a voracious landowner whose criminal avidity for possession of land meets with only timid counteraction on the part of the Church. Calixto exults, slaughtering men and oppressing women in his desire. The film shows the secret agreements between farmers, members of the clergy, corrupt government employees, violent police and, U.S. investors so that there will be no division of land with the small land-owners in the region. Calixto, The Landlord was produced, directed, written, photographed and edited by Honduras film maker Sami Kafati. He worked twelve years on the film – from 1984 until his death in 1996, one week after he finished editing the montage. According to his son Ramsés, the film reflects the passion his father had for creative film, his sensitive approach to contemporary themes, his way of thinking, and above all, his way to use a powerful means of communication to speak out against injustice and inequality in Latin America.
