It is night and the road down by the river is deserted. Teenager Samuel gazes at the river Tejo intent on committing suicide. Elói, an old sailor, comes over to try and find out what the boy intends to do. Samuel invites him to come with him on his last dive into the river. Elói prevents Samuel from casting himself in the water and invites him for a walk about town. The two characters wander for two whole nights, during the festivities for Saint Anthony. In a night club, they meet Esperança, a dumb prostitute, daughter of Elói, with two other friends. Samuel falls in love with her. The waters of the Tejo no longer hold so much attraction for him, but the river still flows by, in wait, as it were, for his last dive. It may be that, ultimately, Elói will opt to throw himself into the river.
