Tierney Gearon?s photographs are regarded as disturbingly ambiguous and perverse. The London police demanded that the Saatchi Galleries, the first to exhibit her offensive photographs of children, remove them. Tierney replied she was deeply fond of the subjects of her photographs and understood them better than anyone. And it could hardly be otherwise, for these are her own children, Michael, four years old, and Emily, six. The documentary follows along with Tierney for three years during which she gathers the elements for her new ventures, a project that promises to be even more provocative than the photographs early on in her career. The production documents a period of tribulation in the life of Tierney, moving from London to Los Angeles to have her third child at the age of 41. Tierney became famous for isolating herself completely. She considers that her work is sufficient to express her ideas. For spectators of her work, there must be no preconceived ideas on the motives for the photographs. Tierney says her photographs are portraits of herself. An American, Tierney was a dancer and a model and began photographing fashion parades backstage. At this same time, she began, also, photographing her children. The photographs drew the attention of art collector Charles Saatchi, who included them in an exhibit I Am a Camera together with photographs by such as Nan Goldin and Richard Billingham.
