The saga of an Italian family as from the end of the sixties until today. Brothers Nicola and Matteo Carati share the same dreams, hopes, reading matter, and friendships until the day they meet Giorgia, a girl suffering from a psychic disorder. Nicola begins activities in student movements and later becomes a psychiatrist, and Matteo drops out from school and joins the police force. Their lives and the lives of the rest of the family are presented parallel to a background of recent history in Italy: the Florence floods, the struggle against the mafia, the great football games with the national team. The title of the film is reminiscent of an anthology of poems by Pier Paolo Pasolini and of an old Italian song.
