Born in Mexico in 1963. He studied theater directing with the Polish Ludwig Margules and actor directing with Judith Weston, in Los Angeles. "Amores Perros" (2000, 24th Mostra), his feature directorial debut, was selected at the Cannes Film Festival. After that, he directed acclaimed films such as: "21 Grams" (2003), awarded for Sean Penn’s acting at the Venice Film Festival; "Babel" (2006, 30th Mostra), which won the awards for best director, best editing, and the ecumenical jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival; "Biutiful" (2010), awarded the best actor prize to Javier Bardem at the Cannes Film Festival; "Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)" (2014) and "The Revenant" (2015), for those he won the Academy Award for Best Director.
