Born in São Paulo in 1939. Director, writer, producer and screenwriter, in 1949 he moved to Rio de Janeiro. In 1962, he took part in a course on direct cinema techniques, with the Swedish documentary filmmaker Arne Sucksdorff, and in 1964 he worked as a continuist for the later interrupted Cabra Marcado para Morrer (Twenty Years Later), by Eduardo Coutinho. He directed the feature films Copacabana me Engana (1968), The Devil Queen (1973), Cordão de Ouro (1977), Espelho de Carne (1984), Uma Aventura do Zico (1998), O Gatão de Meia Idade (2005), No Meio da Rua (2006) and Somos Tão Jovens (2013).
