He has a PhD in cultural studies by the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and currently teaches at the Florida State University. He is the son of a Brazilian mother and a North-American father. He produced and directed the full-length documentary "Beyond Fordlandia: An Environmental Account of Henry Ford’s Adventure in the Amazon" (2018). "Stepping Softly on the Earth" (2022) is his second feature film.
