The writer and filmmaker was born in Liverpool, England, in 1945. In 1975, he began his career writing pieces for radio and theater plays. In 1977, he joined the National Film and Television School, but he had already completed his first feature film, Children, in 1976. He followed this film with Madonna and Child (1977), Death and Transfiguration (1980), Distant Voices, Still Lives (1988), winner of the Golden Leopard at Locarno and the Critics’ Award at Cannes, The Long Day Closes (1992, 16th Mostra), and The Neon Bible (1995, 19th Mostra). He also made the features The House of Mirth (2000), The Deep Blue Sea (2011) and A Quiet Passion (2016), presented at film festivals like San Sebastián, Toronto and London.
