Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1918. Director, screenwriter, critic, journalist, historian. Important name in the history of Brazilian cinema, in 1951, together with Nelson Pereira dos Santos, he founded the Associação Paulista de Cinema. He made his directorial debut in 1953, in the feature film Needle in a Haystack. He also directed Rua sem Sol (1954), an episode of the feature film A Rosa dos Ventos (1957), Sol Sobre a Lama (1963) and A Noiva da Cidade (1978). His work as a historian is marked by the publication of the book Introduction to Brazilian Cinema in 1959. Viany died in 1992.
